The Urue-Offong/Oruko Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has approved a monthly stipend of N20,000 for each National Youth Service Corps member serving in the council area.
The council chairman, Chief Uno Etim, announced the welfare package recently when a delegation of corps members paid him a courtesy visit.
Etim said the payment would take immediate effect, describing the initiative as part of the council’s efforts to support corps members deployed to the area.
“For the corps members serving here, we have approved a monthly stipend of N20,000 for each of the corps members, and the payment takes immediate effect,” the chairman said.
He urged the corps members to regard the local government as their home throughout their service year and assured them of the council’s support as they carry out their assigned responsibilities.
Etim said the council would also address issues affecting their welfare, particularly accommodation.
He directed the Works Department to inspect the corps members’ lodges and identify areas requiring repairs, renovation or other interventions.
According to the chairman, the monthly stipend was intended to support young Nigerians who had been deployed to contribute their skills and energy to the development of the local government.
He urged the corps members to remain dedicated to their duties, assuring them that their safety, welfare and peaceful completion of their service would remain priorities of his administration.
Responding on behalf of the corps members, the Community Liaison Officer, Ukachukwu Ifeanyi, thanked the council chairman for the gesture and commended his administration for its development initiatives across the local government area.
