Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) has issued fresh directives aimed at strengthening waste management practices across the state, including the immediate closure of dump sites located near schools and educational institutions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Chairman of AKSEPWMA, Obong Prince Ikim, directed all private waste evacuators and operators of waste vehicles to dispose of refuse only at the state’s approved dumpsite located at Ntak Inyang.

The agency warned waste contractors against dumping refuse along roads, open spaces, unauthorised dump points, and other illegal locations, stressing that all waste collected from residential, commercial, and institutional premises must be transported directly to the designated dumpsite.
Under the new directive, operators of tippers, Hilux vans, Dyna trucks, and other vehicles used for waste evacuation are required to use only the Ntak Inyang dumpsite for waste disposal.
AKSEPWMA also ordered the immediate shutdown of all waste dump points situated close to schools, citing public health concerns and environmental safety considerations.
The agency further announced that waste evacuation and disposal activities would now be restricted to the period between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily, adding that no dumping would be permitted outside the approved hours.
To ensure compliance, enforcement teams have been mobilised across the state.
The agency warned that individuals, groups, or organisations found violating the directives would face arrest and prosecution before the appropriate Sanitation Court in line with existing environmental laws of Akwa Ibom State.
According to AKSEPWMA, the measures are part of ongoing efforts to maintain environmental cleanliness, protect public health, and preserve the aesthetic appeal of the state.

The agency called on residents, waste management operators, and other stakeholders to cooperate with government efforts aimed at sustaining a cleaner and healthier environment.
Residents seeking further clarification were advised to contact the AKSEPWMA headquarters on New Park Road, Itam, Uyo.
