Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested two suspected drug dealers during a raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Idu Uruan Village, Uruan Local Government Area of the state.
The operation was conducted at about 1:30am on September 9, following intelligence on the activities of suspected criminals operating from the area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said in a statement made available to journalists in Uyo on Saturday that the operation formed part of the command’s efforts to dismantle criminal hideouts and black spots across the state.
The suspects were identified as Fortune Effiong, male, and Comfort Effiong, female.
Police said a search of the location led to the recovery of substantial quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp and Cannabis sativa, allegedly intended for distribution and consumption.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the officers involved in the operation and ordered a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend other persons linked to the alleged illicit drug trade.
Azare said the command would not allow the state to become a haven for drug dealers, cultists, violent offenders and other criminal elements.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information on suspicious activities, assuring them that such information would be treated confidentially.
The suspects remain in police custody while investigation continues.
