The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion of the 2026 International Workers’ Day, praising their resilience, patriotism, and contributions to national development despite prevailing economic and workplace challenges.
In a statement personally signed to mark May Day, Akpabio, who also chairs the National Assembly of Nigeria, said Nigerian workers remain the “engine of the economy” and the “true heroes of democracy.”
He noted that workers across all sectors continue to sustain the country through their daily efforts, singling out teachers, farmers, healthcare workers, artisans, traders, civil servants, security personnel, and private sector employees.

“On this auspicious occasion of Workers’ Day 2026, I… join millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to commend and congratulate the resilient, industrious, and patriotic Nigerian workers whose sweat and sacrifice continue to sustain the heartbeat of our nation,” he said.
Akpabio acknowledged the economic pressures confronting workers, including rising living costs and demanding work conditions, while reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to labour-friendly legislation.
He stated that the legislature remains focused on reforms aimed at improving wages, enhancing workplace safety, strengthening pension systems, and expanding job creation opportunities. According to him, recent steps such as the passage of the new National Minimum Wage Act reflect ongoing efforts to improve workers’ welfare.
“The 10th National Assembly recognises the challenges workers face… I assure you that the Senate remains unwavering in its commitment to legislating for a living wage, safer workplaces, pension reforms, and policies that expand job creation and protect the dignity of labour,” he said.
He also urged employers in both the public and private sectors to prioritise workers’ welfare, describing it as essential to national productivity and economic growth.
“To organised labour, I commend your constructive engagements and patriotism,” he added, while reaffirming continued collaboration with labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, in shaping labour policy and protecting workers’ interests.

Akpabio pledged sustained legislative support for improved working conditions, saying the Senate would continue efforts “until every Nigerian worker can look to the future with hope, dignity, and confidence.”
“Happy Workers’ Day, Nigeria,” he said.
