The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has called for the creation of additional state constituencies in Akwa Ibom State to ensure fair and equitable representation across all 31 local government areas.

Akpabio made the call on Thursday during the declaration of results of the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly primary held at the Essien Udim Council Secretariat, Afaha Ikot Ebak.

He observed that the current arrangement, which has about 26 state constituencies for 31 local government areas, leaves some councils underrepresented, a situation he said should be addressed through constitutional and legislative processes.

According to him, every local government area ought to have its own representative in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to strengthen grassroots representation and inclusiveness.

“Each local government area ought to be represented by a member in the State House of Assembly, but that is for INEC and all stakeholders to look at the constitutional provisions and the laws to see what can be done to bring that to bear,” Akpabio said.

He noted that while some constituencies, such as Essien Udim, have a direct representative, others are merged, including Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara, Etim Ekpo/Ika, Oron/Udung Uko, Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo, and Esit Eket/Ibeno.

Akpabio also congratulated Prince Ukpong Akpabio on his emergence as the APC candidate for the 2027 House of Assembly election, describing his victory as unanimous across all 11 wards of the constituency.

He charged the lawmaker to remain committed to service, noting that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

The Senate President commended Governor Umo Eno for what he described as the peaceful and well-organised conduct of the primary election, adding that the process reflected the prevailing peace and stability in the state.

He further praised APC members and stakeholders for maintaining order throughout the exercise and commended observers, including INEC officials and civil society groups, for witnessing what he described as a peaceful democratic process in Akwa Ibom State.
