The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over recent remarks dismissing the opposition, saying the President should be more concerned about the hardship faced by Nigerians than political rhetoric.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described Tinubu’s comments as “unpresidential” and indicative of a leadership disconnected from the realities confronting citizens.

The reaction follows remarks by the President in which he reportedly said he was not afraid of the opposition, which he mocked as holding its convention “on the street.”

Responding, the ADC said the President’s real challenge ahead of the 2027 general elections would not be opposition parties but millions of Nigerians grappling with economic hardship and insecurity.

“The President should be deeply concerned that majority of Nigerians have rejected his government,” the party said, adding that worsening living conditions, rising debt, and insecurity have eroded public confidence.

The party accused the administration of being preoccupied with politics at a time when citizens are facing a cost-of-living crisis, food inflation, and declining purchasing power.

It also raised concerns over insecurity, citing reports of abductions and the spread of violence into everyday life, while alleging that government response has been inadequate.

ADC further rejected claims that its national convention was held on the street, insisting that such narratives were misleading.

The party alleged that access to public venues for political activities has become increasingly restricted, describing it as a sign of shrinking democratic space under the current administration.

It also criticised what it described as interference in institutional processes, warning against any erosion of the principle of separation of powers.

The ADC maintained that it remains focused on presenting what it called a credible alternative centred on good governance, security, economic recovery, and democratic values.

It added that Nigerians deserve better than “excuses, propaganda, and power games.”
