The Abia State Government has announced plans to commence larval source management activities in Isuikwuato and Aba South Local Government Areas before the end of September as part of efforts to strengthen malaria prevention and control.
Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia.
Kanu said the intervention would be implemented through a collaboration between the Abia State Ministry of Health and the National Malaria Elimination Programme.
According to him, available data identified Isuikwuato and Aba South as areas with significant mosquito larvae breeding activities, prompting the decision to target breeding sites before mosquitoes mature.
“The intervention is based on available data indicating that the two local government areas have significant mosquito larvae breeding activities, hence the need to eliminate the larvae at source,” Kanu said.
The commissioner also announced that the state would commence statewide distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets during the first and second weeks of October.
He said the distribution formed part of measures aimed at reducing exposure to mosquitoes and strengthening malaria prevention across the state.
On diphtheria, Kanu said the Ministry of Health had intensified preparedness and preventive measures following reports of outbreaks in some parts of the country.
He said Abia State had not recorded any case of the disease but added that the State Public Health Department had instituted an outbreak prevention and preparedness plan.
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, were also present at the briefing.
