Anambra State has emerged overall best in the South-East at the 2026 National Teachers Summit, clinching second position at the national level in a strong showing that underscores the state’s growing footprint in Nigeria’s education sector.

The summit, organized by the Office of the Wife of the President in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, also produced a landmark achievement for the state as Chekwube Ifentike of Government Technical College, Onitsha, won a first-of-its-kind national award for teachers. Ifentike went home with a cash prize of N25 million.

The event, which concludes today at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja, has the theme: “Empowering teachers, strengthening the system: A national agenda for education transformation and sustainability. ”

Reacting to the development in a statement on Wednesday, the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, expressed delight over the recognition, attributing the success to sustained investment in education by the state government under Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

“This is a demonstration that the commitment of the state Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to the funding of education is yielding the desired dividends,” Chuma-Udeh said.

According to her, the achievements recorded at the summit reflect the tangible outcomes of deliberate policies and investments in the education sector.

“These achievements represent the fruits of investments in Anambra State’s education sector. We congratulate the awardee, Chekwube Ifentike, for doing the state proud, while charging other teachers to replicate the gesture,” she added.

The latest honours add to Anambra State’s growing list of accolades in the education sector. At the 2025 President’s and Schools’ Excellence Awards, held at Eagle Square, Abuja, as part of activities marking World Teachers’ Day, nine schools from the state received various awards.

At the event, Woliwo Primary School II, Onitsha, emerged as the Overall Best School in Nigeria, winning the star prize of a 16-seater bus. Pinkberry International School, Odume Obosi, also distinguished itself by emerging first runner-up as the Best Approved Private Primary School in Nigeria.

In the teachers’ category, Emmanuel Ndibe of St. Theresa’s Secondary School, Enugwu Ukwu, won first runner-up for Best Approved Private Senior Secondary School Teacher in Nigeria, while Nkechi Ikedi of Pinkberry International Primary School, Odume Obosi, emerged first runner-up for Best Approved Private Primary School Teacher in Nigeria.

Stakeholders say the string of awards further cements Anambra State’s reputation as a leading hub for educational excellence in the country.
