The University of Uyo has formally inaugurated Professor Christopher Nyong Ekong as its 9th substantive Vice-Chancellor, with the new administration unveiling an ambitious 100-day agenda focused on security, digital transformation, infrastructure renewal, academic excellence and improved welfare for staff and students.

The inauguration ceremony, held on Tuesday at the university’s 1,000-seat auditorium on the Main Campus, Nwaniba Road, Uyo, drew principal officers, members of the academic and non-academic staff, students, alumni, government officials and other stakeholders.

In his inaugural address, Professor Ekong, a Professor of Economics and former Chairman of the Committee of Deans, outlined key priorities aimed at repositioning the institution as a secure, technology-driven, research-intensive and globally competitive university.

A major highlight of the agenda is the strengthening of campus security through the deployment of modern surveillance systems. The Vice-Chancellor announced plans to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at strategic locations, introduce drone surveillance technology and establish a centralised digital security control room to improve monitoring and emergency response.

Professor Ekong also pledged to accelerate the university’s digital transformation by expanding internet connectivity and ICT infrastructure across campuses. He said the initiative would include campus-wide Wi-Fi coverage, improved network services and enhanced digital platforms to support teaching, learning, research and administrative operations.

On infrastructure, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed plans for the immediate assessment and rehabilitation of lecture halls, laboratories, offices and other facilities. He added that attention would also be given to road networks, drainage systems, street lighting, environmental sanitation and campus beautification projects.

Addressing student welfare, Professor Ekong announced plans to explore Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements for hostel management while rehabilitating existing accommodation facilities. He assured students that his administration would work with relevant stakeholders to tackle accommodation challenges and improve welfare services.

The Vice-Chancellor further reaffirmed his commitment to academic excellence, quality assurance and research development. According to him, the university will pursue stronger national and international collaborations, promote interdisciplinary research and expand opportunities for research funding and grants.

For staff, he promised capacity-building programmes, improved welfare initiatives and the digitisation of administrative processes to enhance efficiency, transparency and accountability. He also pledged to operate an inclusive and consultative administration anchored on regular engagement with students, staff unions, alumni and host communities.

“The University of Uyo possesses immense potential. Together, we shall build a stronger institution defined by innovation, accountability, academic excellence and service to humanity,” Professor Ekong said.
