FIFA President, Gianni Infantino has condemned the conduct of some Senegalese players, officials, following “unacceptable scenes” during Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, where the eventual champions briefly walked off the pitch in protest over a penalty awarded to Morocco.
In a statement, Infantino described the actions of the players and technical staff as unacceptable, stressing that such behaviour undermines the integrity of the game.
“We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members. It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner,” Infantino said.
The incident occurred during a tense moment in the final when the referee awarded a penalty in favour of Morocco, prompting protests from members of the Senegal team before they temporarily left the field of play.
Despite the disruption, the match was eventually completed, with Senegal going on to emerge champions.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to announce whether disciplinary action will be taken in relation to the incident.
