The United Kingdom will introduce new legal pathways for refugees through community and employer sponsorship programmes as part of efforts to expand safe and regulated resettlement options.

The UK Home Office says community organisations and selected universities will be allowed to sponsor refugees under a new scheme modelled after Canada’s sponsorship programme. The initiative is expected to begin later this year, with the first arrivals anticipated in autumn 2027.

The government also announced plans to introduce an employer-sponsored refugee route next year, providing additional legal pathways for displaced persons seeking protection.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the new measures are aimed at creating more legal routes for genuine refugees while closing loopholes in the asylum system.

The sponsorship programme will operate at a larger capacity than the current UK Resettlement Scheme, although the number of beneficiaries will be capped.

The announcement comes as the UK prepares to introduce tougher asylum legislation, including measures to simplify the deportation of failed asylum seekers and limit family reunification to immediate relatives.

The government says the new sponsorship routes are designed to complement its broader immigration reforms by offering safe and controlled alternatives for refugees in need of protection.
