The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to resume plenary on Thursday, one week after adjourning its last sitting.

During its first sitting of 2026, held last Thursday, the Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct.

The allegations include the demolition of the State Assembly complex and expenditure of public funds without legislative approval, among others. The House had adjourned the sitting to January 15, 2026.

However, as of noon on Thursday, January 15, 2026, there was no indication that lawmakers would reconvene. A correspondent who visited the Assembly observed that activities were yet to resume at the conference hall of the Assembly’s legislative quarters along Aba Road, where sittings are currently held.

No official explanation was given for the failure to resume plenary, and no new date has been announced.

Efforts to obtain clarification from the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Eneme George, were unsuccessful. He neither answered phone calls nor responded to messages as of the time this report was filed.
