Gombe State government has presented a total of N14 million to the families of seven journalists who tragically lost their lives in a road accident in the state.

The journalists died on Monday while returning from a colleague’s wedding in Kaltungo Local Government Area.

The donation was made on Friday on behalf of Governor Inuwa Yahaya by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Abubakar Njodi.

Each bereaved family received N2 million as a token gesture to assist with burial expenses.

Speaking during the presentation, Prof. Njodi described the incident as particularly devastating due to the number of journalists involved in a single crash.

He highlighted the significant contributions of the deceased to the development and public communication efforts of the state.

“NTA, the government is particularly with you at this trying moment,” Njodi said. “When the accident happened, I was deeply moved. These were our colleagues we interact with, daily.

Governor Yahaya has directed that we give the families this token to help cover burial expenses.”

Earlier, Alhassan Yahya, National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), thanked the Gombe State Government for its support.

He recalled similar fatal accidents involving journalists in Plateau, Akwa Ibom, and Adamawa states, emphasizing the persistent dangers faced by media practitioners.

Yahya stressed the urgent need for improved welfare packages, comprehensive insurance coverage for journalists, nationwide.

According to him, the NUJ plans to launch a new insurance scheme by March, aimed at improving the health, safety, and overall well-being of journalists across the country.

Also speaking, Abubakar Adamu, General Manager of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Gombe, expressed his devastation over the incident, praised the state government for supporting the families during a painful, difficult period.
