Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made a surprise appearance on the runway at the 2026 Lagos Fashion Week, joining professional models to showcase a collection by Nigerian fashion designer Ugo Monye.
The governor appeared at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, on Saturday, October 31, drawing cheers and applause from spectators as he walked alongside models during the designer’s presentation.
Sanwo-Olu wore an off-white ensemble combining elements of a traditional Nigerian caftan with a kimono-inspired design, complemented by a beige fedora.

He acknowledged the audience with smiles, gestures and peace signs as he made his way along the runway.
In a post on his official X account, the governor explained that his participation was intended to demonstrate support for Nigerian designers and the growing creative industry in Lagos.
He said he had temporarily stepped away from his regular governance responsibilities to participate in Monye’s showcase.
Sanwo-Olu described Lagos as an increasingly important centre for fashion, creativity and culture, expressing appreciation for individuals contributing to the industry’s development.
Saturday’s appearance marked the governor’s second documented participation on the Lagos Fashion Week runway.
He previously walked for Nigerian fashion label Emmy Kasbit in October 2023, joining models during the closing presentation.
At the time, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the economic significance of the creative industry and pledged continued support for fashion entrepreneurs.
His latest appearance formed part of the closing programme of the main runway presentations, which also featured collections by Nigerian designers Fruché and Ejiro Amos Tafiri.
Monye, who established his fashion label in 2009, is recognised for contemporary menswear designs that incorporate traditional African aesthetics.
His collections have featured at several editions of Lagos Fashion Week, while prominent personalities, including Nigerian musician Davido, have previously appeared on his runway.
The 2026 Lagos Fashion Week, themed “CRAFTED: Heritage. Innovation. Circular Futures,” began on October 28 and concludes on November 1.
The annual event brings together designers, models, buyers, investors and fashion enthusiasts to celebrate African craftsmanship and explore opportunities within the creative economy.

Founded in 2011 by Omoyemi Akerele, Lagos Fashion Week has developed into a platform for promoting African fashion and connecting designers with international markets.
Beyond runway presentations, the event supports conversations about sustainable production, entrepreneurship, cultural heritage and innovation.
Sanwo-Olu’s appearance highlighted the relationship between public institutions and the fashion industry, as Lagos continues to promote its creative sector as part of its wider economic and cultural development agenda.
