The Presiding Bishop and Pastor-General of Rhema Christian Church and Towers, Archbishop Taiwo Akinola, has urged churches across Nigeria to remain politically neutral ahead of the 2027 general elections while promoting justice, accountability and good governance.
Akinola made the call while addressing journalists at the Champion Peace Cathedral in Sango-Ota, Ogun State, where he stressed that religious institutions should guide citizens towards responsible political participation without endorsing particular candidates or political parties.
According to the cleric, churches have a responsibility to speak against injustice, corruption and poor governance while respecting the freedom of individuals to make independent electoral decisions.
He maintained that religious leaders should educate their congregations on civic responsibilities rather than dictate their political preferences.
Akinola also urged Nigerians to assess political leaders based on measurable improvements in citizens’ living conditions rather than campaign promises.
He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties, candidates and civil society organisations to work towards peaceful, transparent and credible elections.
The archbishop warned against vote-buying, voter intimidation, electoral violence, religious manipulation and the deliberate spread of misinformation.

He encouraged eligible Nigerians, particularly young people and senior citizens, to complete their voter registration and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards where necessary.
Beyond electoral issues, Akinola expressed concern over rising living costs, unemployment, inadequate healthcare and substance abuse, urging the government to introduce measures that would improve citizens’ welfare.
He particularly highlighted the dangers of drug abuse among young Nigerians, calling for stronger prevention programmes, access to treatment and rehabilitation services.
The cleric stressed that Nigeria’s younger generation must be given opportunities to contribute meaningfully to national development.
He also advocated improvements in primary healthcare, affordable medical treatment and better working conditions for healthcare professionals.
Akinola cautioned political leaders against exploiting religious and ethnic differences for electoral advantage, describing public office as a responsibility that should be exercised in the interest of all citizens.

He maintained that religious organisations could contribute to national development through civic education, community engagement and advocacy for responsible leadership without becoming partisan political platforms.
The bishop urged Nigerians to approach the forthcoming elections peacefully and make informed choices based on the competence, policies and accountability of candidates.
