Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has revealed that his father strongly opposed his comedy journey in its early days.

Speaking during an interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus said his father was determined that he study Law, a plan that repeatedly failed as he struggled to gain admission to pursue the course.

He eventually settled for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, where he later discovered his flair for comedy and began creating skits.

Sabinus explained that he kept his newfound passion away from his father throughout his time in school. It was only after graduation that his father stumbled on posters featuring him as a performer.

“My dad never knew I was a comedian because I hid it. It was one year after school that he started seeing me on comedy show posters,” he said, adding that his sisters confirmed the details to their father.

This discovery, he noted, infuriated his father who believed his son had abandoned the dream of studying Law.

“He was very furious. He said, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer,’” Sabinus recalled.

However, his father’s disapproval eventually faded after Sabinus began earning from his craft and was able to support the family. Over time, his father accepted and blessed his career path as it continued to thrive.
