The House of Representatives has expressed support for the review of Nigeria’s National Blockchain Education Programme curriculum, calling for greater emphasis on practical skills, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance and industry-relevant training.

Chairman of the House Committee on Delegated Legislation, Richard Bamisile, made the call during a curriculum review meeting in Abuja, organised by the Blockchain Adoption Initiative in collaboration with the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Baze University and Nile University of Nigeria.

Bamisile said blockchain education was increasingly important to Nigeria’s technological advancement, economic competitiveness and capacity to develop indigenous digital solutions.

He explained that blockchain technology extended beyond cryptocurrency, with potential applications in financial services, agriculture, supply-chain management, digital identity verification and secure information management.

According to the lawmaker, Nigeria must strengthen its investment in digital education, practical training and responsible innovation to benefit from emerging technologies.

Bamisile said his experience as chairman of the House ad hoc committee investigating the economic, security and regulatory implications of cryptocurrency adoption and Point-of-Sale operations had demonstrated the importance of technological awareness and regulatory preparedness.

He disclosed that promoting blockchain education formed part of the committee’s recommendations.

The lawmaker urged those reviewing the curriculum to move beyond classroom theories and introduce practical exercises that would prepare participants for real-world technological challenges.

He identified cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, industry engagement and problem-solving as essential components of the proposed curriculum.

Bamisile maintained that an effective blockchain education programme could help young Nigerians acquire skills for entrepreneurship, technological innovation and participation in the international digital economy.

He also emphasised the need for appropriate regulatory safeguards to ensure that innovation supports economic development while protecting the public interest.

UNIVERSITIES SUPPORT PRACTICAL BLOCKCHAIN EDUCATION

Director of Information and Communication Technology at Baze University, Dr Alhassan Abdulmutalab, welcomed the curriculum review, describing collaboration between academic institutions and industry stakeholders as necessary for developing relevant digital skills.

Abdulmutalab recalled that Baze University participated in discussions initiated by the National Information Technology Development Agency in 2023 concerning Nigeria’s national blockchain policy.

He said the proposed educational framework should accommodate university students, professionals, entrepreneurs and other Nigerians interested in understanding blockchain applications.

Similarly, Faculty Coordinator for Continuing Professional Development at AUST, Abuja, Dr Prisca Onuoha-Iroakazi, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to industry-focused education.

She said the partnership offered an opportunity to combine academic instruction with practical experience, helping participants develop solutions to real economic and technological challenges.

Onuoha-Iroakazi expressed optimism that the revised curriculum would equip learners with competencies required to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s growing digital technology sector.

STAKEHOLDERS CALL FOR STRONGER REGULATORY COOPERATION

A stakeholder at the meeting, Janet Oyelade, called for sustained collaboration between blockchain industry operators, educational institutions and regulatory agencies.

She acknowledged previous disagreements between industry participants and regulators, noting that recent engagements had created opportunities for improved understanding and cooperation.

Oyelade commended the involvement of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, Securities and Exchange Commission and Central Bank of Nigeria in discussions concerning the development and regulation of the sector.

She said blockchain education should address existing knowledge gaps in anti-money laundering requirements, data protection, cybersecurity and regulatory compliance.

According to her, the Blockchain Adoption Initiative was established to promote awareness and practical adoption of blockchain technology across multiple industries rather than concentrating exclusively on virtual assets.

She maintained that a comprehensive curriculum could encourage responsible innovation, improve professional standards and strengthen Nigeria’s participation in the digital economy.

The meeting also featured the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Central Administration at Nile University of Nigeria, Professor Prema Kirubakaran, alongside representatives of universities, regulatory institutions and blockchain industry organisations.

The curriculum review is expected to provide a framework for developing practical blockchain competencies and strengthening cooperation between education providers, technology professionals and regulators.
