A Mexican journalist, Hamurabi Huesca Manzano, has been killed in a shooting in the southern state of Oaxaca, bringing the reported number of journalists killed in Mexico in 2026 to nine, according to press freedom organisation Article 19.
Huesca Manzano, the owner of the local news platform Pinotepa Comunica, was reportedly attacked on Friday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on him and two other men.
The Oaxaca State Prosecutor’s Office said the journalist died from injuries sustained during the attack. The condition of the other two men was not immediately disclosed.

The deceased operated Pinotepa Comunica, a digital news platform with more than 52,000 followers, which covered political developments, community affairs and other local issues in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional.
He was also reported to have worked as a taxi driver alongside his journalism activities.
Following the killing, Article 19 called for a thorough investigation, urging authorities to examine whether the attack was connected to Huesca Manzano’s professional activities.
The press freedom organisation stressed the importance of considering his journalism as a possible motive rather than treating the incident solely as an ordinary criminal attack.
The killing has renewed concerns about the safety of journalists in Mexico, particularly those reporting on local politics, organised crime and other sensitive issues.
Press freedom organisations have repeatedly warned that journalists working in regional communities face considerable security risks, including intimidation, threats and targeted attacks.
According to Reporters Without Borders, more than 150 media professionals have been killed in Mexico since 1994, highlighting the longstanding dangers associated with journalism in the country.
The latest incident adds to growing demands for stronger protection of media workers and greater accountability for attacks against journalists.

Authorities have yet to publicly establish the motive behind Huesca Manzano’s killing or confirm whether his reporting activities were connected to the attack.
Investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify those responsible.
