At least five people have been killed and six others seriously injured after an Israeli air strike hit a residential apartment in western Gaza City early Saturday, according to medical officials.
The strike hit the Al-Asala building in the Remal neighbourhood, a densely populated area where displaced Palestinians have also been sheltering.
Medical staff at Al-Shifa Hospital said four women were among those killed, including an elderly Christian woman and her daughter. The six injured people were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The attack occurred during the night while residents were asleep. Reports from the area said multiple strikes hit the apartment and damaged other parts of the multi-storey building.
A fire broke out following the attack and burned for about an hour before Palestinian Civil Defence teams brought it under control.

Emergency crews subsequently began searching the damaged building for people who might still be trapped or missing.
Reports from the scene said Israeli drones remained overhead while rescue operations continued.
The strike comes amid continuing Israeli military operations in Gaza despite a ceasefire agreement reached in 2025.
Israel has accused Hamas of rebuilding its military capabilities and carrying out attacks in violation of the ceasefire, while Hamas has denied the allegations and accused Israel of repeatedly breaching the agreement.
There was no immediate statement from the Israeli military specifically addressing Saturday’s strike.

Rescue operations at the Al-Asala building were continuing as authorities assessed the full extent of the casualties and damage.
