Anthony Joshua has insisted that a long-awaited heavyweight clash with Tyson Fury will carry little meaning for him unless it ends in victory, stressing that success in the ring matters more than securing a contract.

Speaking on Monday ahead of his return to action, Joshua said he would reserve any excitement over the planned “Battle of Britain” until after the fight is won.

“I’m not pleased because the pleasure really comes after victory,” Joshua said. “Signing a contract doesn’t mean anything. Winning is the only true success.”

The British heavyweight’s comments come after confirmation that plans are advancing for a blockbuster meeting with Fury, likely to take place in November. However, both fighters are expected to compete in separate warm-up bouts before the anticipated showdown.

Joshua is scheduled to face Albania’s Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia on July 25, marking his first fight since being involved in a car crash in Nigeria last December that claimed the lives of two close friends.

Meanwhile, Fury recently hinted at his own return by posting training footage from Thailand and suggesting a possible appearance in Dublin, Ireland, on August 1. No opponent has been officially announced.

Joshua, 36, acknowledged the importance of staying focused on the immediate challenge rather than looking beyond Prenga.

“What does boxing give me? It allows me to work. This is my job,” he said, adding that fighters need clear objectives and progression plans to remain motivated.

“Allow me to fight Prenga, allow me to fight Fury, allow me to fight for the championship,” Joshua stated.

Despite recent setbacks, including a knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois in 2024, Joshua said he remains committed to rebuilding and working toward his long-term goals.

“I’ve got a clear goal… I know how tough this year is going to be. I’ve been training hard. That’s my life,” he added.
