The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of 3,400 clean cooking stoves to vulnerable women in Kano State as part of efforts to promote cleaner household energy and reduce health risks associated with traditional cooking methods.
The intervention is being implemented through the Federal Ministry of Environment, with the Kano State Government coordinating the distribution to beneficiaries.
So far, 800 women have received the clean cooking stoves under the programme.
The Kano State Commissioner for Environment, Water and Climate Change, Dahir Hashim, inaugurated the distribution exercise on Monday in Kano.
Hashim said the Federal Ministry of Environment allocated 3,400 stoves to the state as part of measures aimed at reducing the health and environmental effects associated with the use of firewood and other traditional cooking fuels.
According to him, prolonged exposure to smoke from traditional cooking methods poses health risks, particularly to women who spend significant periods preparing meals.
He said the introduction of cleaner cooking alternatives would help reduce beneficiaries’ exposure to smoke and associated respiratory health risks.
The commissioner also disclosed that Governor Abba Yusuf provided ₦25,000 each to the 800 beneficiaries who had received the stoves to support their small businesses and complement the economic benefits of the programme.
Hashim linked the intervention to Kano State’s broader climate action programme, saying the government was pursuing measures aimed at reducing harmful emissions and expanding the adoption of cleaner energy solutions.
He said the state government was also working towards the solarisation of street lights and several Ministries, Departments and Agencies as part of efforts to improve energy efficiency and promote renewable energy.
The commissioner urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the stoves and ensure that the intervention achieves its intended purpose.
He also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for extending the programme to Kano State and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to environmental protection, climate action and grassroots economic empowerment.
