The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested a government contractor accused of unlawfully disclosing classified national defence information to a journalist who allegedly published sensitive intelligence online.

The US Department of Justice identified the suspect as Ian A. Brinksman, 42, of Washington, DC, who was arrested on Friday, October 23, following a search of his residence.

Brinksman has been charged by criminal complaint with unlawfully transmitting national defence information.

According to federal prosecutors, he allegedly accessed classified intelligence reports outside the scope of his official duties and shared sensitive information with a person with whom he had a romantic relationship.

The recipient operates a newsletter on Substack, an online publishing platform.

Investigators alleged that at least five articles published in 2026 contained information closely matching classified intelligence reports, including material designated top secret.

The Justice Department said Brinksman began working for a US government agency in 2020 before taking up a systems integration development role with a private contractor serving the same agency in 2022.

He held a top-secret security clearance granting access to Sensitive Compartmented Information.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed that the case involved a contractor providing services to the Central Intelligence Agency and that the matter had been referred to the FBI.

According to the criminal complaint, investigators examined communications records, classified database access logs, workplace entry records and other evidence while reviewing the alleged disclosures.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg accused Brinksman of deliberately obtaining sensitive intelligence beyond his authorised responsibilities and passing it to someone he allegedly knew intended to publish it.

Eisenberg described the alleged conduct as a serious breach of the obligations attached to access to classified government information.

US Attorney General Todd Blanche said the Justice Department would continue pursuing cases involving unauthorised disclosures capable of threatening national security.

FBI Director Kash Patel similarly described the protection of classified information as a major counterintelligence priority.

The investigation is being conducted by the FBI’s Chicago Field Office, with substantial assistance from its Washington Field Office.

The Justice Department’s National Security Division and federal prosecutors in Virginia are handling the prosecution.

The arrest comes amid continuing US government efforts to prevent unauthorised disclosures of sensitive intelligence and protect national security operations.

However, the allegations against Brinksman have not been proven in court.

He remains presumed innocent unless and until prosecutors establish his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
