A 36-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of a 63-year-old woman in New York City’s Central Park.
The suspect, identified as Jonathan Robles, was booked on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon at about 9 p.m. on Sunday, according to the New York Police Department.
Police said officers found the woman unconscious near East Drive and East 74th Street in Central Park at approximately 9:40 a.m.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene, where the woman was pronounced dead.
Authorities initially reported that the victim had suffered stab wounds but subsequently withdrew that account. Investigators later said she had sustained trauma to the head.
The woman was reportedly not carrying identification when she was found, and authorities had yet to publicly release her identity.
Police also said they believe the victim may have been experiencing homelessness, although further details about her circumstances were not immediately available.
Robles’ last known address was listed in police records as the Barbour Hotel homeless shelter in the Hell’s Kitchen area of Manhattan.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a possible motive or detailed the circumstances leading to the woman’s death.
The incident occurred as a slow-moving nor’easter brought heavy rainfall and severe weather conditions to New York and other parts of the northeastern United States.
The discovery prompted concern among some visitors to Central Park, one of New York City’s most prominent recreational areas.
The NYPD said investigations remain ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
