The Osun State Police Command has warned residents against participating in a planned protest allegedly linked to a group identified as the “Congress of Cultists.”
The command said intelligence available to it suggested that the group was associated with the Neo-Black Movement, popularly known as Black Axe.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, described the organisers as “faceless” and cautioned individuals and groups against using the proposed demonstration to cause violence or disrupt public order.
The command said it would not allow any group to exploit the situation to threaten lives, destroy property or undermine the peace in the state.
It warned that security personnel had been directed to respond to activities considered capable of threatening public safety.
The police also urged residents with grievances or disputes to use lawful channels to seek redress rather than resorting to violence, self-help or reprisals.
Investigation into killing
The warning comes as the police continue investigating a recent killing in the state.
According to the command, investigators have obtained useful leads and identified some suspects allegedly connected to the incident.
The suspects, however, remain at large, with police operatives continuing efforts to locate and arrest them.
The command appealed to residents who may have information about the killing or the whereabouts of the suspects to assist the investigation.
It assured members of the public that information supplied to the police would be handled confidentially.
The police said investigations would continue until everyone found to have been involved in the incident was arrested and brought before the appropriate authorities.
Police urge community leaders to intervene
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, appealed to parents, community leaders, traditional rulers and religious leaders to caution young people against participating in activities capable of destabilising the state.
Mr Zungura urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant.
He also asked members of the public to report suspicious movements and activities to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
The command said it remained committed to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and public order across Osun State.
