The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old man, Mosuru Issa, who it described as a suspected vehicle theft kingpin, and recovered a stolen Toyota Camry along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Issa, a resident of Osungboye Street, Agege, Lagos State, was arrested by operatives of the Mowe Divisional Police Headquarters during a stop-and-search operation around the Mowe axis of the expressway.
The suspect was arrested at about 7:30 a.m. on Friday after three occupants of a wine-coloured Toyota Camry reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled on sighting the police.
According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the behaviour of the occupants raised the suspicion of the officers, who pursued them.
“Three occupants, on sighting the police, suddenly abandoned the vehicle and fled in different directions, raising suspicion,” the police said.
The officers subsequently arrested Issa, while the vehicle was recovered and secured.
The command said preliminary investigation showed that the vehicle had allegedly been stolen on September 7 from where it was parked in Ojoo, Lagos State.
Police authorities said efforts were ongoing to identify and locate the owner of the vehicle, as well as apprehend the two other occupants who escaped.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
Commenting on the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Bode Ojajuni, commended the officers involved for their vigilance and prompt response.
Ojajuni, according to the statement, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to strengthening security operations across the state and tackling vehicle theft, highway crime and other criminal activities.
The command said the recovery underscored the importance of routine patrols, intelligence-led policing and lawful stop-and-search operations in detecting criminal activities and recovering stolen property.
The police also warned criminals against using Ogun highways as escape routes, assuring residents that security operations would be intensified across the state.
Vehicle owners were advised to take additional precautions when parking their cars, including using steering locks, tyre locks and other appropriate anti-theft devices, particularly in public and unsecured locations.
