Two inmates awaiting trial at Uyo Custodial Centre have died and two others sustained injuries, after a high-voltage wire snapped and struck part of the facility following an explosion from a nearby faulty transformer.
The incident reportedly caused a massive blackout and damaged several electrical appliances within the centre.
The high-tension wire fell directly on a section of the custodial facility, electrocuting four inmates.
While two were rushed to the hospital, they were later confirmed dead. The two others sustained injuries but are receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, Akwa Ibom State Controller of Corrections, Frank Okonkwo, described the event as “very unfortunate.”
He explained that the transformer explosion “caused a lot of damage, both to our facility and the families of the deceased.”
“When that explosion occurred at the transformer, officials of PHEDC said it was due to too much voltage. It destroyed or damaged all electrical appliances, computers, and even affected our barracks and the official residence of the officer in charge. The most painful aspect was the loss of two inmates’ lives,” Okonkwo said.
He stressed that the victims, who were awaiting trial for conspiracy, kidnapping and armed robbery, remain innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

The families of the deceased have been contacted, and one family has completed arrangements for the retrieval of the body, which will be released once investigations are concluded.
Okonkwo noted that the transformer had experienced faults in the past and called on relevant authorities to intervene to prevent future tragedies.
He added that the legal department is investigating the incident and will present a comprehensive report in due course.
