Britain’s Prime Minister Andy Burnham has welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron to 10 Downing Street as the two leaders begin talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing shared challenges.
The meeting marks Macron’s first official engagement with Burnham since he became British prime minister and is expected to centre on issues including migration, European security, support for Ukraine, economic cooperation and the future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss efforts to tackle illegal small boat crossings across the English Channel, with Britain and France increasing cooperation between security and intelligence agencies to disrupt migrant smuggling networks.
The meeting follows Macron’s visit to London for the exhibition of the historic Bayeux Tapestry, where he joined King Charles III and Prime Minister Burnham at the British Museum. The event was described by officials as a symbol of longstanding ties between Britain and France.
Burnham has said closer cooperation with European partners is important for Britain’s economic growth, while maintaining the government’s position on key post-Brexit arrangements.
The discussions between Burnham and Macron come as both countries seek greater coordination on defence, energy, migration management and international issues, including continued support for Ukraine.
