A Mexican musician, his pregnant wife, their three-year-old daughter and a nanny have been killed in a suspected multiple homicide at their residence in Atizapán de Zaragoza, in the State of Mexico.
Jonathan Meléndez, 38, keyboardist with popular Mexican indie-rock band Camilo Séptimo, was found dead alongside his 35-year-old wife, Ana Paula, who was four months pregnant, authorities said.
The couple’s three-year-old daughter and their 21-year-old nanny, identified as Aleida Romero Victorio, were also found dead at the apartment in an upscale neighbourhood near Mexico City on Tuesday night.
Romero Victorio’s family confirmed that she worked for the couple as a nanny.
Her aunt, Lorena Victorio Cabrera, described her as hardworking and responsible, saying she did not deserve the fate that befell her.
Authorities said three of the victims, including the child, sustained gunshot wounds to the head, while another was shot in the back.
Two of the victims were reportedly found with their hands tied. The family’s dog was also discovered dead with its legs bound.
A six-year-old boy was found alive at the scene and was not injured, according to the authorities.
The State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office said preliminary investigations indicated that the killings occurred between 5:30 p.m. and 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
Two men were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the killings following a joint operation involving the State of Mexico Prosecutor’s Office, the federal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, and the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security.
One of the suspects, identified as Diego Sebastián “N,” was described by prosecutors as a probable perpetrator and an associate of Meléndez.
A second suspect, identified as Gerardo “N,” is also being investigated over his alleged involvement in the killings.
Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, said one of the suspects allegedly used his relationship with one of the victims to gain access to the home.
Authorities have yet to disclose further details about the motive for the killings.
The prosecutor’s office said information concerning the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the legal status of the suspects would be released as the investigation progresses.
Camilo Séptimo confirmed Meléndez’s death in a statement on social media, describing him as someone whose life and music would be remembered with love and gratitude.
The band said it was honouring his life, his music and the impact he had on those who knew and worked with him.
The identities of the suspects’ lawyers, if any, were not immediately known.
