The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected receiver of stolen mobile phones linked to an armed robbery syndicate and recovered dozens of phones and other exhibits as part of ongoing efforts to combat crime across the state.

Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, disclosed this during a press briefing in Uyo, stating that the arrest followed intelligence-led investigations into a recent armed robbery incident along the Calabar–Itu Road axis.

The suspect, identified as Musa Idris, was allegedly found in possession of 34 assorted Android phones, two button phones, a tricycle, a power bank, a rechargeable fan, a standing fan, a jack knife and substances suspected to be illicit drugs.

According to the Police Commissioner, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had previously been arrested in October 2025 over alleged armed robbery-related offences and possession of more than 200 suspected stolen mobile phones.

Azare said intelligence gathered by investigators indicates that the recovered phones are suspected proceeds of armed robbery operations carried out within and outside Akwa Ibom State.

He further disclosed that the suspect has provided useful information to investigators regarding a broader criminal network involved in the movement and resale of stolen mobile phones beyond Nigeria’s borders.

The police boss noted that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate.

In a related development, the Command announced the prosecution of Akaninyene Udo, popularly known on social media as “AK Philo,” over the alleged dissemination of false security information capable of causing public panic.

According to Azare, investigations revealed that the suspect circulated a social media post bearing the caption, “Eket get ready for us,” accompanied by the image of an armed bandit.

He said the post generated fear among residents and warned that individuals who create or spread false security alerts and misleading information would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Commissioner emphasised that misinformation on security matters undermines public confidence and could interfere with ongoing efforts by security agencies to maintain peace and order.

Meanwhile, the Command has commenced enforcement of regulations against vehicles operating without registration plates or with altered, obscured, covered or defaced number plates.

Azare explained that the exercise is designed to strengthen security, improve crime detection and prevent criminals from using unregistered vehicles to perpetrate unlawful activities.

He urged motorists across the state to comply with vehicle registration requirements and ensure their number plates remain visible at all times.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and called on residents to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with timely and credible information.

He also announced plans to recognise and honour police officers who have recently received public commendation for professionalism and exemplary service, describing integrity, discipline and dedication as essential values for effective policing.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command assured residents of its continued resolve to sustain operations aimed at protecting lives and property while ensuring that criminal elements are brought to justice.
