Questions are beginning to emerge over Viktor Gyokeres’ role in Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s plans after the Swedish striker remained an unused substitute in the club’s opening two Premier League matches of the season.
Gyokeres was left on the bench during Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Coventry City in the opening fixture and again did not feature as the Gunners secured a narrow 1-0 win away at Aston Villa.
The forward’s absence has attracted attention given his status as a major signing and his goalscoring record last season. However, Arteta has continued to select Kai Havertz as his preferred central striker in the early stages of the campaign.
Against Aston Villa, Arsenal secured victory through Bukayo Saka’s second-half goal, with Gyokeres remaining among the substitutes throughout the match.
Arteta has previously indicated that every player in his squad will have opportunities during the season, suggesting that Gyokeres remains part of his plans despite his limited involvement so far.
The striker’s situation is expected to remain a talking point as Arsenal continue their Premier League title defence and prepare for a demanding schedule ahead.
