A judge has instructed the jury in the trial of Lindsay Clancy to continue deliberations after jurors said they were unable to reach a unanimous decision.
The Plymouth Superior Court jury informed Judge William Sullivan on Tuesday that they could not agree on whether Clancy should be held criminally responsible for the deaths of her three young children in 2023.
Clancy, a former Massachusetts nurse, is accused of killing her three children at their Duxbury home in January 2023. She has pleaded not guilty, with her defence arguing that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the incident and should not be considered legally responsible.
Prosecutors have argued that Clancy was aware of her actions and should be held accountable, while the defence has focused on her mental health condition and the treatment she received before the deaths.
The jury had spent several days reviewing evidence and hearing arguments before beginning deliberations. After reporting that they were deadlocked, Judge Sullivan directed them to continue their discussions in an effort to reach a verdict.
The case has drawn national attention because of the legal questions surrounding mental illness, criminal responsibility and postpartum psychosis.
