Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has backed Marcus Rashford to play a major role for the club this season, describing the forward as a valuable asset if he maintains his current attitude, fitness and determination.
Rashford returned to Manchester United’s starting lineup for the first time in 626 days during the club’s Premier League clash against Ipswich Town, following loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona. Barcelona declined the option to make his move permanent, leading to uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford.
Speaking after United’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich, Maguire said Rashford had impressed teammates with his training performances and commitment since returning to the squad.

“He’s trained really well, and if Marcus wants to be here, wants to work, improve and help the team, we’re willing to have him in the squad,” Maguire said.
The defender added that Rashford remains a significant attacking threat and believes the forward can continue to improve if he stays fit, motivated and focused.
Rashford’s future at United had been uncertain after he fell out of favour under former manager Ruben Amorim, resulting in loan moves away from the club. However, new manager Michael Carrick has reintegrated him into the first-team setup, with the forward now aiming to rebuild his career at Old Trafford.
Maguire, who has also experienced periods of criticism during his Manchester United career, said players at the club often face intense scrutiny during difficult periods.
He noted that Rashford had been part of a challenging period for the team and said setbacks could help players develop resilience.
“Marcus has been here for many years, and every season was never going to be perfect because as a team and club we haven’t always been perfect,” Maguire said.

The defender also praised midfielder Kobbie Mainoo after his performance against Ipswich, describing the young player as a stronger competitor who has improved significantly, particularly in defensive aspects of his game.
United secured their first major win of the season with the 5-2 victory, led by captain Bruno Fernandes’ hat-trick, while Rashford’s return added further optimism around the squad’s attacking options.
Maguire urged the team to remain focused despite external pressure, saying Manchester United players must avoid becoming overly confident after victories or losing confidence after defeats.
