Swiss authorities have launched a manhunt following a shooting incident at a rave party in the town of Aarau that left a 22-year-old woman dead and five others injured, with some victims reported to be in serious condition.
Police said the victims were all residents of Switzerland and were in their 20s. Security forces have cordoned off parts of Aarau, located about 50 kilometres west of Zurich, as investigations into the attack continue.
Authorities appealed to members of the public to provide any photographs, videos or information that could assist investigators in identifying the suspect.
A 34-year-old witness who spoke to the media said gunshots were heard shortly after the music stopped at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. He said some attendees initially thought the sound was fireworks before panic spread among the crowd.
According to the witness, some people took cover behind the DJ booth, while others attempted to escape the area. He said one woman was struck by a bullet and later died despite efforts to save her.
“It is incredibly tragic. She was young. That something like this could happen in Aarau, at a local event, is simply unimaginable,” the witness said.
Police confirmed that the 22-year-old woman died from her injuries at the scene, while five other victims sustained injuries during the attack.
Following the shooting, armed police officers were deployed across the town, with security vehicles and police convoys seen around the area as authorities searched for the suspect.
The event, organised as a techno rave party at a covered horse racetrack, was expected to attract about 3,500 people.
The shooting has drawn attention in Switzerland, a country with one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Europe, although incidents involving gun violence remain relatively uncommon. The country introduced stricter gun control measures in 2019.
Police have not disclosed details about the suspected attacker or a possible motive, as investigations continue.
