OpenAI has announced plans to stop providing its artificial intelligence models to Cursor, a coding tool company recently acquired by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, in a move that has further intensified the long-running dispute between Musk and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman.
OpenAI said the decision was based on concerns that SpaceX might not use its technology within the company’s terms of service, citing previous experiences with companies linked to Musk.
“We are making this choice because we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service,” OpenAI said in a statement.
The move follows SpaceX’s $60 billion acquisition of Anysphere, the startup behind Cursor, in an all-stock deal completed earlier this month.
Musk, who has been engaged in a public dispute with Altman for years, responded to the announcement by saying he “couldn’t care less” about OpenAI’s decision.
He also accused Altman and OpenAI president Greg Brockman of being untrustworthy, repeating his previous claims that OpenAI abandoned its original non-profit mission.
The disagreement between both parties has previously resulted in a legal battle, with Musk filing a lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman over allegations that the company moved away from its founding objectives. A federal jury later ruled against Musk, saying his case was filed too late.
Meanwhile, Anthropic, another major artificial intelligence company and competitor to OpenAI, said it would increase computing support for its Claude AI models on Cursor.
Cursor co-founder Michael Truell, who is now an executive at SpaceX, said the company was engaging with OpenAI to resolve the dispute.
OpenAI said it had proposed November 12, 2026, as the date for ending access to its models, adding that its agreement with Cursor allowed cancellation after a change in ownership.
The latest development marks another chapter in the rivalry between Musk and OpenAI, as competition in the global artificial intelligence industry continues to grow.
