The Democratic Leadership Alliance, DLA, has called for urgent measures to address the socio-economic challenges facing the nation.
The party chairman, Mr Meme Samuel, said this in Abuja while announcing Dr Moses Adebisi as the new DLA presidential candidate, following a presidential substitution primary election.
He explained that the substitution was carried out in line with the country’s constitution, describing the exercise as a milestone in the party’s history.
Mr Samuel said he had stepped aside to allow Dr Adebisi to emerge as the party’s presidential flag bearer in the overall interest of the party and the nation. He pledged his continued support for the new candidate, expressing confidence that Dr Adebisi would accomplish the goals and objectives of the party.
The DLA chairman expressed belief in Dr Adebisi’s capacity, commitment and ability to contribute to the Nigerian project. He urged the Federal Government to provide modern equipment for security agencies and recruit more personnel to strengthen their capacity to protect lives and property.
Mr Samuel said although the debate on state police remained important, Nigerians should not allow the process to become a distraction from the responsibility of the Federal Government to safeguard citizens.
He described the lives of Nigerians as a national emergency and called for urgent action to address the worsening security situation.
Mr Samuel also urged President Bola Tinubu to intensify efforts towards tackling poverty and improving the living conditions of Nigerians, stressing that leadership should be about sacrifice and service to the people.
The newly announced presidential candidate, Dr Moses Adebisi, thanked the party for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work towards rapidly transforming the country.
Dr Adebisi identified improving the standard of living, fighting corruption, promoting national unity, tackling insecurity and industrialising the country as some of his major goals.
He called for a new generation of leaders to take over the mantle of leadership across the country, stressing that every Nigerian has a role to play in the socio-economic development of the nation.
Dr Adebisi said Nigeria was endowed with abundant human and natural resources capable of making the country one of the greatest nations in the world.
He identified compulsory education and economic empowerment for the teeming youth population as key priorities of his administration.
The DLA presidential candidate said he had studied the development models of industrialised countries, including the United States, South Korea and China, with a view to adapting relevant aspects of their experiences to Nigeria.
Dr Adebisi stressed that his ultimate objective was to ensure that the country’s abundant natural resources were harnessed for the benefit of all Nigerians.
