The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to introduce concrete measures to ease Nigeria’s economic hardship within three months and establish clear timelines for improving citizens’ living conditions.

The forum also called on the Federal Government to acknowledge shortcomings in the implementation of its economic reforms and provide measurable targets for assessing progress.

ACF Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Mohammed-Baba, made the call during a television interview on Thursday, expressing concern over the continued economic difficulties facing Nigerians.

Mohammed-Baba argued that repeated assurances of future economic improvement were insufficient without practical measures to address the immediate challenges confronting households and businesses.

He identified declining purchasing power, rising housing costs, expensive building materials, transportation and electricity charges, deteriorating roads and insecurity as major concerns.

The ACF spokesman questioned whether the government had adequately assessed the economic and social circumstances of Nigerians before introducing its reforms.

He maintained that the administration should acknowledge areas where its policies had fallen short and communicate specific plans for addressing the consequences.

“When you say ‘more time,’ just how much more time do you need?” he asked.

Mohammed-Baba proposed that the government establish annual performance targets, clearly identifying the improvements Nigerians should expect within defined periods.

He suggested that three months should be sufficient for the administration to introduce meaningful interventions aimed at reducing the hardship experienced by citizens.

According to him, the government must demonstrate greater accountability by setting realistic objectives and regularly communicating progress towards achieving them.

He also criticised what he described as an imbalance between the sacrifices demanded of ordinary Nigerians and the lifestyles maintained by public officials.

The ACF spokesman argued that the burden of economic adjustment should be shared fairly rather than falling disproportionately on citizens already struggling with rising living costs.

He urged government officials to recognise the difficulties facing households and adopt policies that would provide measurable improvements in living standards.

Speaking on the 2027 general elections, Mohammed-Baba said the forum would assess political parties and candidates based on their positions on good governance, accountability, anti-corruption, fairness and equity.

He maintained that the organisation’s political considerations would be guided by these principles rather than party affiliation.

Mohammed-Baba further advised the Federal Government to make achievable commitments and avoid assurances that could not be supported by practical implementation plans.

The ACF’s position adds to public discussions about the impact of the administration’s economic reforms and the measures required to translate government policies into improvements in citizens’ welfare.
