The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, eight days after a leadership crisis erupted in the Assembly.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency I, had reportedly resigned as Speaker on Monday, August 17, 2026, following his suspension by the lawmakers.
However, the Assembly, under the new Speaker, Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, maintained that Agbebaku did not resign and proceeded to formally impeach him.
The motion for the impeachment was moved by the Majority Leader, Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by the member representing Etsako Central Constituency, Ahmed Waziri.
Addressing the House during plenary on Monday, Speaker Idaiye said the impeachment notice had been signed by 17 members of the Assembly.
He explained that the decision to convert Agbebaku’s indefinite suspension to impeachment followed the failure to officially present and document his purported resignation notice.
Idaiye subsequently directed the former Speaker to return all government property in his possession, warning that security agencies would be engaged if he failed to comply with the directive.
The Speaker said the action was necessary to formally communicate the Assembly’s position to the public and bring the leadership dispute to a conclusion.
The development follows the suspension of Agbebaku and the subsequent election of Idaiye as Speaker, amid disagreements over the leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly.
