The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, has cautioned police officers against conducting indiscriminate searches of National Youth Service Corps members’ mobile phones under the pretext of checking for internet fraud.

Adekimi gave the warning on Wednesday during a working visit to corps members participating in the 2026 Batch B Stream II Orientation Course at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kwara State.

The police commissioner also assured the corps members of adequate security throughout their service year, saying the command would work with other security agencies to protect them wherever they were deployed across the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ilorin.

According to the statement, Adekimi was received at the camp by the NYSC State Coordinator, Musa Kafarda, who commended the police command for its efforts towards safeguarding the welfare of corps members deployed to Kwara.

Addressing the corps members, Adekimi urged them to adapt confidently to their new environment and contribute positively to the development of their host communities.

He described the corps members as young Nigerians with significant potential to contribute to national development and encouraged them to make their service year meaningful.

The commissioner also advised them to use social media responsibly and avoid digital thuggery or other activities capable of disrupting public peace.

Adekimi emphasised that corps members were entitled to dignity and respect when dealing with police officers.

He specifically directed officers not to search corps members’ phones indiscriminately while they were on the road under the guise of investigating internet fraud.

The CP further urged corps members who experience inappropriate conduct from police personnel or have security concerns to report through the command’s designated channels or visit the nearest police formation.

He encouraged the corps members to regard the police as partners during their service year and to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in protecting them and their host communities.

Adekimi also commended the camp commandant and other security personnel for maintaining a safe and conducive environment for the orientation exercise.

He wished the corps members a productive orientation programme and a rewarding service year, urging them to make positive contributions to the communities where they would eventually be posted.
