A pilot has been killed while two Pennsylvania State Police troopers sustained injuries after a small aircraft collided with a police helicopter at Carlisle Airport in Pennsylvania, United States.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night and involved a Cessna 150 aircraft and a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407 helicopter.

Acting Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner George L. Bivens said the helicopter was conducting a training exercise near the runway when the Cessna veered off course while landing and struck the rear section of the helicopter.

The impact caused the aircraft to break apart, while the helicopter rolled across the ground before coming to rest on its side.

Bivens said the helicopter crew had little opportunity to see the approaching plane before the collision.

The two troopers aboard the helicopter were identified as Cpl. Bryce Corman and Trooper Jason Mills. Both were initially trapped inside the aircraft following the crash.

According to authorities, Corman managed to free himself and subsequently helped Mills escape from the damaged helicopter.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said both troopers were expected to survive their injuries.

Dr Ashley Ludwig, trauma medical director at Hershey Medical Centre, said the troopers were in stable condition and had suffered minor injuries. One of them was expected to be discharged before Thursday morning, while the other was kept in hospital overnight for observation.

Authorities withheld the identity of the deceased pilot pending notification of the family.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
