The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has commenced a two-day strategic communication workshop for Heads of Voter Education and Publicity from its 36 state offices and the Federal Capital Territory as part of preparations for the 2027 General Election.

The workshop, held in Abuja, is designed to strengthen the capacity of INEC’s communication officers to combat misinformation and disinformation, improve voter education and enhance public confidence in the electoral process.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said effective communication would be critical to the success of the 2027 elections.

Haruna said the training would equip participants with the skills required to provide accurate and timely information to voters while effectively countering false narratives capable of undermining confidence in the electoral process.

He disclosed that INEC expects to consolidate a voters’ register of more than 100 million Nigerians following the recently suspended Continuous Voter Registration exercise.

The National Commissioner described the projected size of the register as an indication of the enormous responsibility before the Commission as preparations intensify and political campaigns commence.

Haruna also cautioned against attributing low voter turnout solely to INEC, stressing that political parties have an important role to play in mobilising citizens and strengthening their internal democratic structures.

Also speaking, the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs Victoria Eta-Messi, said the workshop would enhance the ability of state communication officers to manage election-related information, tackle fake news and deliver credible public communication.

Eta-Messi commended the resource persons, Professor Okey Ikechukwu and Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, describing them as seasoned communication professionals whose expertise would contribute to strengthening the capacity of participants.

The workshop features sessions on voter education, legal literacy, INEC’s communication policy, combating misinformation and best practices in official election communication.

The Commission said the initiative forms part of its broader preparations to ensure that voters receive accurate, accessible and reliable information ahead of the January 16, 2027 General Election.
