Cross River State Governor, Mr Bassey Otu, has directed the withdrawal of a complaint against Denis Odama, a young Cross Riverian who was reportedly arrested over a derogatory statement allegedly made against the Governor.
Governor Otu, in a statement, said he had been fully briefed on the circumstances surrounding the case and had directed the aides who reported Odama to the Police to withdraw their complaint.
He also directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Cross River State to urgently review the matter and, in the exercise of his constitutional discretion, take necessary steps to discontinue the case.
The Governor said the move was aimed at ensuring Odama’s release from the correctional centre without further delay and his reunion with his family.

Otu said his decision was anchored on his belief in the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, particularly Section 39, which guarantees citizens the right to freedom of expression.
He reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the right of all Cross Riverians to express themselves, including those who criticise him.
The Governor, however, urged young people to exercise their constitutional freedom responsibly and with due regard for the cultural values and moral standards of the state.
According to him, the people elected him to listen and respond to positive suggestions, advice and constructive criticism, assuring that he would continue to listen and take appropriate action.
Governor Otu described the development and protection of Cross River State as a collective responsibility and called on citizens to work together in safeguarding the state.
“God bless our dear State,” he said.
