The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), has led a Nigerian delegation to South Korea to participate in the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) for the country’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections.

The programme, organised by the South Korean National Election Commission, commenced its inaugural activities on Saturday, May 30, 2026, in Seoul and is scheduled to run from May 29 to June 5, 2026.

It brings together election management bodies, international observers, and electoral experts from different countries to observe and exchange knowledge on best practices in election administration.

Accompanying the INEC Chairman on the visit are National Commissioner, Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu; the Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia; and the Director of Training, Dr Binta Kasim Mohammed.

During the programme, the Nigerian delegation observed early voting procedures at a polling centre in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, gaining firsthand exposure to South Korea’s electoral systems and operational processes.

According to INEC, the participation is aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and improving Nigeria’s electoral governance through exposure to global standards, innovations, and comparative electoral practices.

The Commission noted that such international engagements are part of its ongoing efforts to deepen democratic processes and enhance the credibility and efficiency of elections in Nigeria.
