The Lagos State Government has impounded 175 vehicles for allegedly violating traffic regulations, particularly the improper use of dealer number plates.
The enforcement was carried out by the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with vehicle registration and identification regulations.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the development on Monday and warned motorists and vehicle dealers against using dealer number plates for purposes outside those permitted by law.

According to the commissioner, the dealer plates recovered from the affected vehicles would be confiscated, while the impounded vehicles would undergo further investigation.
He also warned that vehicles operating with fake, unauthorised, concealed or improperly displayed registration numbers could face sanctions, including impoundment and prosecution under relevant traffic laws.
Osiyemi urged motorists and vehicle dealers to comply with regulations governing the use of dealer plates, stressing that the enforcement was intended to improve accountability, ensure proper vehicle identification and enhance road safety.
Under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, dealer number plates are intended for specific and temporary purposes.
These include authorised test drives, vehicle inspections, delivery or collection of vehicles, and the movement of unregistered vehicles from ports or approved dealer premises to designated locations.

The law does not permit the use of dealer plates for routine private transportation, continuous use on public roads or on vehicles that have already been sold and are awaiting permanent registration.
The state government said the ongoing enforcement would continue to ensure that motorists and dealers comply with the regulations governing vehicle registration and the use of dealer number plates.
