The Lagos State Task Force has impounded 278 commercial motorcycles, commonly known as okada, during a weeklong enforcement exercise targeting violations of the state’s transport regulations.

The operation, carried out across several parts of Lagos, focused on riders operating on highways and other restricted routes in breach of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

Officials said the crackdown is part of an ongoing enforcement campaign aimed at improving public safety and strengthening security across the state.

Areas covered during the exercise included Ikorodu, Agric Bus Stop, Festac First Gate, Mazamaza, Iyana School, Iyana-Iba, Idimu Road, Egbeda, Kola Bus Stop, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun Roundabout, Ojokoro (Ijaiye), Berger Bus Stop, Ojodu, Akowonjo Roundabout, Igando Bus Stop, LASU-Iba Road, and Pipeline Road in Idimu.

According to the Task Force, several offenders were arrested for operating on prohibited routes and major highways in disregard of traffic laws and safety guidelines.

Authorities also reported that some of the seized motorcycles were used to transport hazardous materials such as petroleum products and gas cylinders, while others were found carrying schoolchildren and toddlers under unsafe conditions.

The agency confirmed that the impounded motorcycles would be processed for possible forfeiture to the Lagos State Government through the courts, in line with the provisions of the 2018 transport law.

Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, said enforcement efforts would continue until full compliance is achieved.

“We will not be cowed or allow criminal elements to overrun Lagos or undermine lawful order,” he said.
