Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has expressed satisfaction with renewed progress on the 18-storey Ibom Towers project in Victoria Island, Lagos, directing contractors to sustain the pace of work towards completing the building’s structural component by August 2027.
Governor Eno made the remarks on Friday during an unscheduled inspection of the project site on Abayode Cole Crescent, where he observed ongoing construction and interacted with the project consultants and contractors.
The Governor said the commercial property was strategically important to the State’s efforts to diversify its revenue base and build sustainable assets beyond dependence on oil revenue.
“The building is mainly for commercial use,se and Akwa Ibom wants to participate in the property market in this country. This project will increase the State’s IGR,” Eno said.
He noted that Lagos and Abuja remained major property investment destinations and stressed the need for Akwa Ibom to strategically position its assets to generate long-term returns.
The Governor, who also expressed delight at the involvement of Akwa Ibom indigenes in the project, directed the State Statistician-General to assess the project’s economic and employment impact.
Managing Director of Western Legacy Construction, Kunle Adedigba, assured the Governor that the project would now progress rapidly, with the contractor targeting the completion of a floor every three weeks.
Structural Engineering Consultant, Engr. Murray Ekong, attributed the initial slow pace to extensive foundation and safety works necessitated by the poor soil condition at the site.
He explained that more than 100 piles and retaining walls had been installed to provide a stable foundation and protect neighbouring structures from the effects of deep excavation.
With the major foundation challenges now resolved, Ekong assured that construction would accelerate, with a new floor expected to be completed every three weeks.
Other members of the project team, including Lead Architectural Consultant, Arc. Victor Akpan, Quantity Surveyor, Chief Tony Ndah, and representatives of the contractor, also reaffirmed their commitment to quality, safety and timely delivery.
The 18-storey Ibom Towers is being developed as a commercial asset through which the State seeks to strengthen its presence in Nigeria’s property market and expand its internally generated revenue.
