Eight people, including six children, were found dead inside a home in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, following a house fire, with authorities confirming that some of the victims had sustained gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders were called to the residence shortly before noon on Friday after receiving reports of a fire. Upon entering the home, police and firefighters discovered the bodies of all eight occupants.
Captain Jacob Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said investigators were still working to formally identify the victims and determine their exact causes of death. The deceased children were between the ages of five and 15.
Authorities have not disclosed how many of the victims suffered gunshot wounds, describing the scene as “complex” and requiring an extensive investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate that investigators are not searching for any external suspects. Officials said one of the leading theories being examined is that the incident may have been a murder-suicide.
According to law enforcement, everyone believed to have lived in the home was found dead.
Investigators also described the fire as suspicious, saying there is reason to believe it was deliberately set. Fire investigators from the Michigan State Police have joined local authorities in examining the scene to determine the origin and cause of the blaze.
Grand Haven Township, located along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, has a population of about 18,000 residents and lies approximately 40 kilometres west of Grand Rapids.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, with further details expected as forensic examinations and victim identifications are completed.
