The Lagos State Government has directed residents to remain indoors during the May edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, May 30, between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, appealed in a statement issued late Thursday, urging Lagosians to actively participate in the sanitation exercise by cleaning their homes, surroundings, drainage channels and public spaces.

Wahab commended residents for the impressive turnout recorded during the April edition, which marked the reintroduction of the monthly sanitation exercise in the state.

He described environmental cleanliness as vital to healthy living and sustainable development, stressing that the sanitation programme had come to stay.

The commissioner encouraged residents to improve the level of compliance recorded in April and embrace a lasting culture of cleanliness across communities.

According to him, the First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, will lead a team of government officials to monitor compliance in Alimosho Local Government Area, while the Head of Service, Olabode Agoro, will supervise monitoring activities in Apapa Local Government Area.

Wahab also disclosed that the state government had deployed compactor trucks across Lagos to ensure the prompt evacuation of waste generated during and after the exercise.

He added that all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas would participate in monitoring the sanitation exercise to ensure full compliance statewide.

The commissioner warned residents against unhygienic practices and the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels and unauthorised locations, noting that such acts contribute to environmental degradation and flooding.

He also cautioned residents against patronising cart pushers for waste disposal, describing the practice as illegal.

According to Wahab, the operations of Private Sector Participation operators have been expanded to cover more communities across the state.

He further warned that abatement notices would be issued to residents who fail to clean their surroundings during the exercise, adding that defaulters could face prosecution.

The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining a clean, hygienic and flood-free environment across Lagos.
