France captain Kylian Mbappe has named Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the two best footballers in the world.

Mbappe made the remarks while speaking to journalists during the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he was asked to identify the best player among himself, Messi, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Responding to the question, the French forward said Messi and Ronaldo remain the benchmark in world football.

“Messi is the best together with Cristiano Ronaldo,” Mbappe said.

The Real Madrid star has been in impressive form at the tournament, scoring twice in France’s opening Group fixture against Senegal. Messi also delivered a standout performance, netting a hat-trick in Argentina’s victory over Algeria.

Reflecting on Messi’s performance, Mbappe said he was not surprised by the Argentine’s goalscoring exploits.

“I knew that Leo Messi was going to score goals… he always scores,” he said.

Mbappe added that he remains focused on helping France progress in the tournament by continuing to score goals.

“I’m going to keep scoring goals to help my team go as far as possible.

“And of course, by scoring, I’ll get closer to the record,” he added.

The French captain will be hoping to inspire Les Bleus to a place in the knockout stage when they face Iraq in their next group match on Monday.
