The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of growing anxious over the political influence of its governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, ahead of the 2027 election.

The party said residents of the state are yearning for effective leadership and improved governance, insisting that no amount of political propaganda can stop what it described as the growing demand for change across Ogun State.

The position was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Ogun PDP Youth Leader, Comrade Lukman Ejalonibu, in response to comments made by the Special Assistant on Youth Development to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Comrade Olamide Lawal.

Lawal had reportedly stated during a television programme that Adebutu does not pose a political threat to the APC and lacks the political strength and performance record needed to challenge the ruling party in the next governorship election. He also argued that zoning considerations in the state further weaken Adebutu’s chances.

Reacting, Ejalonibu described the APC’s continued focus on Adebutu as evidence of his growing popularity and acceptance among the people.

According to him, it is contradictory for the ruling party to repeatedly attack a politician it claims is not a threat.

“No political party spends valuable time and resources discussing an opponent it considers irrelevant. The APC’s constant references to Adebutu only confirm his growing influence and connection with the people of Ogun State,” he said.

The PDP youth leader defended Adebutu’s record in public service, highlighting his constituency projects, educational support initiatives, youth empowerment programmes and community development efforts during his time in the House of Representatives.

He described Adebutu as a committed son of Ogun State whose contributions to the welfare of residents predate his political ambitions.

Ejalonibu further stated that the PDP remains focused on presenting credible alternatives and promoting people-centred governance rather than engaging in political distractions.

He also criticised the APC for relying on zoning arguments instead of addressing pressing issues such as unemployment, infrastructure deficits and economic hardship affecting residents.

According to him, democracy should be driven by ideas, competence and public trust rather than political rhetoric.

The PDP maintained that the people of Ogun State are more interested in quality service delivery and improved living conditions than political propaganda as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 governorship contest.
