Australia began its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note after securing a convincing 2-0 victory over Turkey in a Group D encounter in Vancouver on Saturday.
Despite being outplayed in possession for much of the match, the Socceroos produced a disciplined and clinical performance to claim all three points against a Turkish side making its first World Cup appearance in 24 years.
Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring in the 27th minute, breaking through a crowded defence before firing a low shot past the goalkeeper. The goal came shortly after a scheduled hydration break and gave Australia a valuable advantage.

The 20-year-old forward marked the moment with a celebration inspired by Australian football icon Tim Cahill. His strike also saw him become the youngest Australian player to score at a FIFA World Cup.
Turkey responded with sustained pressure and controlled much of the game, dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. However, Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach delivered an impressive performance, making several crucial saves to keep his side ahead.
One of the standout moments came when Beach denied a powerful effort from Abdulkerim Bardakçı before later stopping a dangerous free kick from Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler.
Australia doubled its lead in the 75th minute after Connor Metcalfe capitalised on a defensive error by Ismail Yüksek, calmly finishing to put the result beyond doubt.
Speaking after the match, Irankunda revealed that comments made by Turkey captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu before the game had provided extra motivation for the Australian squad.
Turkey, which enjoyed 72 per cent of possession and registered 30 shots compared to Australia’s nine, struggled to convert its dominance into goals.

Turkish coach Vincenzo Montella acknowledged Australia’s tactical approach and insisted his side had not underestimated their opponents despite the disappointing result.
The victory places Australia in a strong position in Group D, which also includes the United States and Paraguay. The Americans currently lead the group after recording a 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening match.
For Turkey, the defeat marks a disappointing return to football’s biggest stage after ending a 24-year absence from the World Cup.
